Dental practice card fees: where the money actually goes
Updated 10 September 2026 · 6 min read
Dental card fees have two parts. Stripe charges its published processing rate directly under your own Stripe agreement, and Enterprise Pay Gateway charges a subscription from $49 a month plus a platform fee of 0.20%–0.75% on processed volume. Both are small next to the cost of a balance that is never collected.
Two bills, two companies
Stripe bills processing to your own account because the money moves through it. The platform fee is separate, shown separately, and is not a markup on Stripe's rate.
Any provider quoting a single blended percentage is combining software cost and processing cost so you cannot compare either.
What it costs on real dental amounts
On a $180 hygiene visit the Starter platform fee is $1.35. On a $2,400 crown-and-root-canal case it is $18 on Starter and $14.40 on Growth. Stripe's processing rate sits on top and is billed by Stripe.
There is no additional charge for hosted checkout, text-to-pay links, payment plans, membership billing, reminders or extra staff logins.
The fee nobody counts
A $600 patient portion that is never collected costs you more than a year of fees on that patient. Practices spend hours arguing about basis points while carrying five figures in aged receivables.
Same-day collection is worth more than any rate negotiation available to a single-site practice.
ACH for the big cases
Where a large case is paid by bank transfer instead of card, the card processing component does not apply at all. For implant and full-arch cases this is the largest single saving available.
Offer ACH as the default on high-value invoices and card as the alternative.
Frequently asked
- Can we pass card fees to patients?
- Surcharging is regulated and varies by state and card network rules. Check locally before adding any surcharge.
- Is there a fee per payment link?
- No. Links, checkout, plans and reminders are part of the subscription.
- Which plan suits a single-site practice?
- Starter at $49/month to begin with; Growth's 0.60% platform fee usually wins once monthly collected volume grows.
