Dental payment software: patient balances, plans and treatment deposits
Updated 10 September 2026 · 7 min read
Dental payment software should do more than take a card. A practice needs to collect the patient portion after an insurance estimate, split larger treatment plans into scheduled payments, hold a deposit against booked chair time, and keep a card on file for recalls. Enterprise Pay Gateway does all of that on your own Stripe account, from $49 per month plus a 0.20%–0.75% platform fee.
The patient portion is where practices lose money
Most dental revenue leakage is not fraud or fees. It is the patient balance left over after the insurance estimate, invoiced days later, chased twice, and eventually written off. The longer the gap between the chair and the payment request, the lower the collection rate.
Payment software fixes this by making the request immediate and easy to pay: a link the patient can settle from their phone at the front desk, or before they leave the car park.
Treatment plans need scheduled payments, not invoices
A crown, implant or orthodontic case is a purchase decision, and asking for the full amount on the day suppresses case acceptance. Splitting it across scheduled payments on a saved card converts more treatment plans and gets you paid on a predictable rhythm.
The important detail is what happens when a card fails. Automatic retries, a clear notice to the patient, and visibility for the practice manager are what separate a payment plan that works from one that quietly stops.
Deposits protect chair time
Chair time is the scarcest asset in a practice. A deposit taken at booking for longer appointments makes the slot real, and it gives your cancellation policy something to stand on.
Fees, shown as two lines
Stripe bills its own published processing rate directly to you. Enterprise Pay Gateway bills a monthly subscription from $49 plus a platform percentage on processed volume, 0.75% on Starter down to 0.20%–0.35% on enterprise terms. You will always see the two separately, including in the fee calculator on our pricing page.
Enterprise Pay Gateway is payment software. It is not a practice management or clinical records system, and it does not submit insurance claims.
Frequently asked

- Can patients pay by bank transfer instead of card?
- ACH bank payments can be enabled on your Stripe account, which is often cheaper for larger treatment balances.
- Can we keep a card on file for recall appointments?
- Yes, cards are saved securely by Stripe against the patient's customer record. Card details never touch your systems or ours.
