Dental payment software vs. your practice management system

Updated 10 September 2026 · 6 min read

A practice management system runs charting, scheduling and claims. Dental payment software runs the money: card on file, texted checkout links, treatment deposits, patient payment plans and membership billing. Most practices keep both — the clinical system stays where it is, and payments move to software built for collecting.

They solve different problems

Practice management software was built around the chart and the claim. It knows the procedure codes, the schedule and the insurance submission, and it does those well.

What it rarely does well is the patient's side of the money: taking a deposit before a case starts, holding a card with proper authorisation, splitting a large balance over months, or chasing what is left without a phone call.

What dental payment software adds

Hosted checkout pages and texted payment links so a balance can be paid from the car park. Card on file with written authorisation for the patient portion after a claim settles. Scheduled plans for large treatment balances. In-house membership plans that bill monthly on their own.

It also adds a receivables view that shows what is genuinely outstanding, rather than a ledger built for clinical reporting.

You do not have to replace anything

The clinical system stays. Payments run alongside it through your own Stripe account, and payouts land in the practice bank account under your own Stripe agreement.

Practices that already use Stripe often adopt this purely as an add-on — the processing relationship does not change, only what sits on top of it.

How to judge the swap

Measure one number before and after: the share of the patient portion collected on the day of treatment. If that rises, the software has paid for itself several times over regardless of the fee line.

The second number is days in receivables. Everything else is detail.

Frequently asked

Do we have to leave our practice management system?
No. It keeps charting, scheduling and claims; payment software handles collecting from patients alongside it.
Can we import our existing patient list?
Yes, patients and products can be imported by CSV, and existing store platforms can be connected for read-only sync.
What does it cost?
A monthly subscription from $49 plus a platform fee of 0.20%–0.75% on processed volume. Stripe's processing rate is billed separately by Stripe.

Start taking payments for your dental practices

Create a free account, connect payments through Stripe, and take your first payment the same day. Enterprise Pay Gateway is software, not a bank or lender — Stripe processes payments under your own Stripe agreement and pays out to your bank.
